Mosaic at Santa Maria in Trastevere A close-up view of a mosaic from the portico of one of the oldest Christian churches in the world and the first church ever dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Santa Maria in Trastevere. The church was founded by Pope Callixtus I in the third century, when emperors were still pagan and Christianity a minority cult. It was made a basilica around 350 A.D., when Rome legalized Christianity. This is a night shot from the square. This early Christian mosaic radiated from the spotlights on the building.
