Whitetail Deer

I was shooting deer in Chincoteague NWR in a field near sunset when out of the corner of my eye, I saw this doe jump across the road behind me to start walking into the trees. Since the backlight on her was much nicer than the side light that I had on the other deer, I swung the lens around and shot this one quickly, before she went into the trees. I ended up liking this grab shot more than any of my shots of the deer that I had been photographing before this.

This is a Whitetail doe. I originally had identified her on this page as a Sika. My friend and excellent photographer Dan Creighton corrected me. Note the tail here, long and rimmed with white, and compare it to the tail of the Sika, which has darker fur, a full white rump and very small tail. Sika are not actually deer, but a species of Asian Elk introduced to the Chincoteague area in the 1920s.
