Santorini Cliff

One of the cliffs in Santorini, looking especially red in the sunset light. This was on a drive to the tip of the caldera for the sunset, where I saw the Santorini lighthouse indicated on the map. A caldera is the lip of a volcano, and that is what the island of Santorini is -- the lip of a huge undersea volcano. The island is not shaped like a big ring, as you would imagine the lip of a volcano, but instead is a giant crescent, after one arc of the ring was blown apart and sank following a particularly violent eruption. You can see the little island in the middle of the volcanic crater at the top of the frame.

I included a horizontal view of this location, showing more of the island, in the next shot.
