Black-crowned Night Heron A Black-crowned Night Heron in its nest. Several hundred of these wild Herons nest in the trees of the Washington, DC national zoo in April and May each year. This past year, we were particularly lucky, as the birds chose trees very near a raised walkway, making flight shots and photography into the nests easy without disturbing the birds. I shot hundreds of shots there last year, most of them with the premier bird photographer in North America, Artie Morris.
